Ultrasonic Attenuation Characteristics of Glass-Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Hull Structure

Glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) ship structures have hull plate thicknesses of 10 mm or more and are fabricated using a higher proportion resin matrix systems than E-glass fiber reinforcements. Therefore, GFRP is classified as highly attenuative material, this characteristic major cause large errors in ultrasonic nondestructive testing for quality inspections. In study, considering the aforementioned design fabrication characteristics structures, prototypes with various glass weight fractions, contents (Gc), laminate were fabricated. Then, pulse-echo test was performed prototypes, attenuation plates investigated by conducting statistical analyses. These results demonstrated that variation 30–50% Gc used structure design, thickness had greater impact on characteristics. The increase naturally increased scattering waves but did not significantly affect coefficient. effects inner voids also investigated, confirmed laminates region attenuation.
